Exercise
Physiology Laboratory

The Exercise Physiology laboratory facilities are located
in the Eugene Applebaum Pharmacy and Health Sciences Building.
They consist of a general research/teaching laboratory (Room
1225), a state-of-the-art underwater weighing facility, and a
biochemical analysis room (Room 2323). In addition, a
satellite
exercise physiology laboratory has been established in conjunction with the Center for Urban and African American Health.
The modern
design of the Exercise Physiology laboratory facilities supports research on a wide range of topics
related to the examination of the effects of acute and chronic
exercise on human physiological responses, physical performance
characteristics, and body composition.
Students at all levels are routinely allowed to participate
in ongoing research projects either to satisfy specific curricular
requirements, or simply to broaden their research experience.
Areas of faculty research include:
-
Studies on the interaction of selected nutritional factors
on physiological responses and performance (caffeine,
ginseng, echinacea).
-
Profiling physiological fitness and nutritional characteristics
of various groups of pediatric athletes (soccer, gymnastics,
skating, swimming, cheerleading, others). -
Evaluations of the effects of exercise on mucosal immune function
and upper respiratory tract infections.
For additional information contact KHS faculty members: Hermann-J. Engels,
Mariane Fahlman,
Randall Gretebeck, or John C. Wirth.
